At Uncorked, we have developed a system (Winedex) that will enhance our customers' wine tasting experience by helping them understand, identify with, and become self-sufficient in comparing and selecting wines from around the world.

Each wine will be assigned a profile made up of a series of symbols representing the wine's identifying characteristics such as type, body, sweetness, style, fruit flavor and non-fruit flavor. The customer can then make an informed decision on his or her selection based on its characteristics as well as compare already experienced wines to other wines encouraging exploration.


	White The white wine category describes still wines made from white grape varietals. Some white wines do have a slightly effervescent quality but are not necessarily considered sparkling. Like red wines, white wines can be made into a wide variety of style, body, and flavor. In addition, white wines can vary in level of sweetness.
	Red The red wine category is used to describe still wines made from red grape varietals. Red wines are usually dry and can be made into a wide range of body, style, and flavor.
	Pink The pink wine category is used to describe rosé wines which are pink in color. The pink color is a result of the producer removing the grape skins from the juice early in the fermentation process. All wines of this type are produced from red grapes. Rosé is usually dry, with bright red fruit and is a very versatile food wine.
	Sparkling The sparkling wine category is used to describe wines that are, well, sparkling. Sparkling wines are made from both red and white grape varietals and in a variety of methods resulting in differing levels of sweetness, bubble size and bubble quantity or concentration. Sparkling wines are made all over the world at reasonably high quality.
	Dessert The dessert wine category is used to describe wines that are generally consumed after dinner due to their relatively high level of residual sugar or sweetness.


	Bone Dry This category describes dry wines that have a noticeably dry character even in comparison to other dry wines.
	Dry This category describes wines that have completed the primary fermentation process where by the sugar present in the grapes has been converted to alcohol. Dry wines can, on occasion, appear somewhat sweet as other sensations detected on the palate can be easily confused as sweetness, such as fruitiness or higher alcohol content.
	Off-Dry This category describes wines that maintain a small amount of residual sugar after the fermentation process. As expected, the residual sugar is detected on the palate as sweetness. Although wines of this character are certainly sweeter than dry wines, they are generally considerably less sweet than the sweet category mostly made up of dessert wines.
	Sweet This category describes wines that generally contain 5% or more residual sugar. Although most wines of this category are considered dessert wines, some can make for a unique and lovely aperitif.


	Light This category describes wines that have perception of little-to-no weight in your mouth. Wines of this category generally contain a lower level of alcohol and higher level of acidity. Although most of these wines will be made of white varietals, some red varietals are made in this light body style such as Pinot Noir or Gamay.
	Lt Medium The light-to-medium category describes wines whose body lies somewhere between light and full, but closer to light than full. In the milk analogy, this category might relate to 1% milkfat.
	Med Full The medium-to-full category describes wines whose body lies somewhere between light and full, but closer to full than light. In the milk analogy, this category might relate to 2% milkfat.
	Full This category describes wines that have the perception of weight in your mouth. The perception is generally dependent on alcohol content. When determining body, it can be helpful to consider the weight of milk based on milkfat content. For example, a lighter wine may feel like skim milk and a fuller body wine like whole milk in your mouth.


	Red This fruit flavor/aroma family refers to fruits that are red in color. Fruit flavors that fall into this category include (among others): Strawberry, Cherry, Raspberry, Cranberry, and Watermelon. Wines that offer the appearance of red fruit character in their aroma and flavor are generally made from red wine varietals.
	Black This fruit flavor/aroma family refers to fruits that are dark in color giving the appearance on the winedrinker's nose and palate of a similar dark character. Fruit flavors that fall into this category include (among others): Blackberry, Black Cherry, Plum, Blueberry, and Black Currant or Cassis. Wines that offer the appearance of black fruit character in their aroma and flavor are generally made from red wine varietals.
	Tropical This fruit flavor/aroma family refers to fruits that are generally grown in tropical climates. Fruit flavors that fall into this category include (among others): Pineapple, Coconut, Banana, Melon, and Mango. Wines that offer the appearance of tropical fruit character in their aroma and flavor are generally made from white wine varietals.
	Citrus This fruit flavor/aroma family refers to fruits that contain a higher level of citric acid. Fruit flavors that fall into this category include (among others): Lemon, Lime, Orange, and Grapefruit. Wines that offer the appearance of citrus fruit character in their aroma and flavor are generally made from white wine varietals.
	Stone This fruit flavor/aroma family refers to fruits containing a large pit or stone at its center. Fruit flavors that fall into this category include (among others): Peach, Apricot, and Nectarine. Wines that offer the appearance of stone fruit character in their aroma and flavor are generally made from white wine varietals.
	Tree This fruit flavor/aroma family refers to fruits that are, as the name suggests, grown in trees. Fruit flavors that fall into this category include (among others): Apple and Pear. Wines that offer the appearance of tree fruit character in their aroma and flavor are generally made from white wine varietals.


	Oak This flavor/aroma family refers to flavors/aromas that are oaky in character or are spawned from oak aging or treatment. These characters include (among others): Oak, Toast, Toasted Marshmallow, Coffe Bean, Vanilla, Baking Spices, Cedar, Cigar Box, and Smoke. The appearance of this oak character in aroma and flavor can be found both in white and red wine varietals as oak aging is used to make many wines of many varietals.
	Spice This flavor/aroma family refers to flavors/aromas that are spicy in character. These characters include (among others): Black Pepper, White Pepper, Chile Pepper, Clove, Anise (Licorice), Cocao, and Cinnamin. Wines that offer the appearance of this spice character in their aroma and flavor are generally made from red wine varietals.
	Earth This flavor/aroma family refers to flavors/aromas that are earthy in character. These characters include (among others): Earth, Mushroom, Barnyard, Dusty Trail, Baked Earth, Tobacco, Tea and Dried Herb or Gherig. Wines that offer the appearance of earth character in their aroma and flavor are generally made from red wine varietals.
	Herbs This flavor/aroma family refers to flavors/aromas that are herbal in character. These characters include (among others): Mint, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Nondescript Dried Herbs. Wines that offer the appearance of this herbal character in their aroma and flavor are generally made from red wine varietals.
	Grain This flavor/aroma family refers to flavors/aromas that are yeasty in character. These characters include (among others): Yeast or Lees, Pastry, and Baked Bread. Wines that offer the appearance of this grain character in their aroma and flavor are generally made from white wine varietals and are especially prevelant in sparkling wines.
	Mineral This flavor/aroma family refers to flavors/aromas that are minerally in character. These characters include (among others): Mineral, Flint, Wet Stone, Chalk, Sea Foam/Sea Spray, and Petroleum. Wines that offer the appearance of this mineral character in their aroma and flavor are generally made from white wine varietals.
	Nuts This flavor/aroma family refers to flavors/aromas that are nuttty in character. These characters include (among others): Almond, Walnut, Hazelnut, Pecan and peanut butter. Wines that offer the appearance of this nutty character in their aroma and flavor can be made from red or white wine varietals and are especially prevelant in sparkling and dessert wines.
	Floral This flavor/aroma family refers to flavors/aromas that are floral in character. These characters include (among others): Rose petal, Rose Water, Orange Blossom, Violet, Honeysuckle, and Nondescript Dried Flowers or Potpourri. Wines that offer the appearance of this floral character in their aroma and flavor can be made from red or white wine varietals.
